Notes

Sever is motivated by political disenfranchisement, disconnection, and disunity. It draws from two main sources for its musical material: 1) a taunting melody played by a marching band during a protest that I witnessed, and 2) my attempt to approximately transcribe Sarah Palin’s speech patterns. These are not inherently pleasant sounds, but they both became subjects of fascination for me. The piece obsessively iterates on these ideas, searching for some kind of sense. -IS
